OpenSUSE 10.2
I’ve been able to install the OpenSUSE 10.2 on the Old Pentium III 1 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD (Dell Optiflex GX 150).
There are several points that I learned:
- Use the Text Mode (F3) to avoid bugs (not being asked for root password)
- Do not activate the Enable Desktop Effect for old video card (such as i810)
Since my computer does not have a DVD ROM, I choose the Network Install method.
I use two iso files: Mini.iso and DVD ISO of the OpenSUSE 10.2
Below are steps I took for the installations:
- Burn the mini.iso into the CD-ROM the CD-ROOM will be the boot-CD
- Extract the content of the OpenSUSE 10.2 ISO (I use 7zip) to a shared directory (e.g. c:\Shared\OpenSUSE\) the c:\Shared is the shared directory while the OpenSUSE is a sub directory that contains files from the OpenSUSE 10.2 DVD ISO.
- Boot the Computer to be installed with OpenSUSE using the boot-CD and choose the installation procedure.
That is it folks, I’ve update the installation with the latest all available update (beware It’s big around 900 MB download) and right now the OpenSUSE 10.2 is running fine. In fact I wrote this blog using the OpenSUSE 10.2 Firefox. So far the performance has been quite good (subjective opinion).
Next Step, I would like to clone (create image) served as backup and to install it into another similar configured Optiflex GX-150.
Chiao…..
