Visual Studio .NET 2005 dynamic web port

Hi,

I’ve just found a quirck when developing the Web Service with VS .NET 2005, it seems that the dynamically web port was missmatched. Thankfully I’ve found the solution at http://www.wahooga.com/archive/2008/02/20/visual-studio-development-web-server-automatic-port-numbering-problem.aspx

So the problem was caused by NOD32 AntiVirus, that somehow make the VS .NET 2005 missmatched the port used by the Local ASP.NET Web Server.

ORACLE 10g with C#

Hi,

This time I would like to share my experience with the Oracle 10g Free edition (XE).

After installing the OracleXE successfully, I tried to connect to it with VS .NET 2005, and to my surprise it is not a straight process. I’ve read many article I can find by GOOGLING but no luck, non of the article I found can help me connect to the Oracle XE from my VS .NET 2005.

It took about 4/5 hours  for me to figure it out how to connect to the OracleXE from .NET.

Below are steps that I took:

1. Install OracleXE

2. Connect to OracleXE from Web Site Admin to make sure that It’s running (use the ‘system’ login, supplied with administrator password that I supplied at the installation process).

3. Install the ODAC ( Oracle .NET Tools latest version for 10g)

4. Use Oracle Net Manager (under ODAC->Migration tool Start Menu).

5. Add New Service Naming with the Oracle Net Manager

- Service_Name, You can name it whatever you wanted.

- Choose the Protocol (I choose TCP / IP)

- (Oracle 8i or later) Service Name IS ‘XE’ (Default value for Oracle 10g XE).

-  Finished the setup and exit the NET Manager (Choose to save when asked).

If you failed to connect after doing all those thing, please make sure you supplied the correct ‘Oracle 8i or later Service Name’, go to Oracle Web Site Admin, and look for it in the => Administration=>About the Database. Check the Setting check box and press ‘Go’ button, you can find the ‘NAME’ field value(default ‘XE’).

I hope this little ‘how to’ can help others that bumped into the same problem as me connecting to Oracle 10g XE edition with VS .NET 2005.

Cheers…

Converting NRG file to ISO

Hello everybody,

I’ve been trying to convert a NERO Image file (.nrg) to ISO so that I can mount it on the OS X Leopard. After trying the nrg2iso and failed, I end up using nrg4iso it’s a command line utility that can be used to convert .nrg file into iso. For those of you that comfortable using a command line, the nrg4iso is definitely a better tools to convert the .nrg into .iso file.

Here is a sample OS X terminal command to run the nrg4iso : ./nrg4sio “xxx.nrg” “xxx.iso”

Before running those command, please make sure that the terminal is already in the nrg4iso directory,  and don’t forget to replace the nrg and iso file name to include full path name, in my sample above the nrg and iso file resides along in the same directory as the nrg4iso executable.

Below is the URL to download nrg4iso: http://code.google.com/p/nrg4iso/

Macbook air is a BAD BUY?

Now that I’ve been very satisfied with my macbook, I expect the macbook air (MBA) would be just another good product from APPLE, but it’s seems that my expectation will not be justified.

I’ve just came across a good review of the Macbook Air at arstechnica and according to the review, the MAIN WEAKNESS of the new Macbook Air is the Battery Life, the author claim that he had average of 150 minutes using the MBA.

I think that people considering to buy the new Macbook Air should read the review first before making the decision to buy it.

Sure it’s not for everyone, but I agree with the author that the MBA is just really come too short, modern notebook battery life is around 3 to 5 hours, and I think those are the acceptable range for most users of notebook, even if some users could live with just two and a half hours, choosing the MBA might be a bad choice, because they can have much more better performance (experience, confinience, etc) by choosing other ultraportable than MBA (even my macbook can go more than three and a half hours with WiFI and VMWare Fusion running).

I’m SAD to say that the new Macbook Air is probably a really bad buy. I would think that user with 1800 USD to spend for an ultraportable notebook might find much better choice from other manufacturer. If Mac is the only choice, then the macbook might be a much better choice than the MBA.

Below are URLs for the ArsTechnica review of the new Macbook Air (MBA)

My first Macbook

I’ve just bought a new Macbook (MB062) at iBox Mall Kelapa Gading 3.

It’s quite a beautiful piece of equipment :) but I’m not just looking for a beautiful notebook, one factor that I value most from a notebook is durability. Because I plan to use the machine as my main computer where I do my programming (with .NET C# 2.0) and other activity.

Before choosing this macbook over other contender (mainly Thinkpad T and X series) I’m quite doubtful about it’s record of durability especially after I found many problem with the early macbook (core duo/first generation) when I search in the internet. But there is one website that vanish my doubt http://www.bitsofnews.com/content/view/5554/2/

To make long story short after reviewing my options for about 3 weeks, I decided to buy the macbook (MB062) at 21 Sept 2007 and I’m glad to make the choice. I’ve just use the macbook for few days so I can’t comment on the durability/reliability but the experience of using OS X in a macbook compared with my previous notebook Windows XP SP2 IBM X30, I would say the macbook are doing well indeed.

Every software update are taken care by the OS X. In IBM X30, IBM supplied IBM update utility that really simplified upgrading component of you system from BIOS to drivers. Compared with my Fujitsu N3000 even though the Fujitsu is a more modern system compared with the IBM X30, I would never comeback to the Fujitsu or any other brand notebook beside the IBM T or X series. IBM Thinkpad are famous for the durability and reliability and my personal experience prove that claim.

The macbook really surprise me because I never thought to find such easy to use system and durability in such a beautiful package. There is however one feature that I missed from using the Thinkpad X series it is Thinkpad Light (a little LED that will illuminate the keyboard) to allow you work in the dark that unfortunately not available in the macbook (macbook pro has a illuminate keyboard).

Usually beauty and durability does not came along together but bravo to the apple to combine such characters into the macbook and with the OS X easy to use and stability (good performance too) the combination is complete.

Ubuntu 7.04 and Linux Mint 3.0

Hi, everybody.

After running the OpenSUSE 10.2 successfully, I tried to install the Linux Mint 3.0 and Ubuntu 7.04 both are sucessfull, but at the end I choose the Ubuntu because Linux Mint 3.0 some how can not open the Open Office document that I shared using Windows Shared. I have to copy the file into local system to open it. Fortunately Ubuntu 7.04 show no problem at all opening open office document through Windows Shared.

There is one features in Mint 3.0 that I liked but does not exist in Ubuntu 7.04, it is xorg-edit a GUI utility to manage X-Server setting. So I google around and found out the download link to install the xorg-edit (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xorg-edit) I download the binary and extract it into my home folder. When I tried to run the application the first time it refused to run, after carefully read the read-me file, I found out that there is one library needed to run the application, so I run the add/remove applet and search for the library and installed it. Once the library installation finished, I tried to run x0rg-edit using the command line (as instructed in the read-me file) and success.

The Ubuntu somehow feel more responsive may be because Mint has more GUI (include Baryl) but even without activating the Baryl in Mint, Ubuntu still feel faster.

Ubuntu and Mint are both very good distro, If you have a good hardware (less than 2 years old) I think you would be fine with Mint, however for my Dell GX150 ( P3 1Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD 7200, i815 chipset) Mint just too much.

I will try to install the Ubuntu or mint into my IBM X30 when I finished installing 5 GX150 with Ubuntu 7.04.

OpenSUSE 10.2

I’ve been able to install the OpenSUSE 10.2 on the Old Pentium III 1 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD (Dell Optiflex GX 150).

There are several points that I learned:

  1. Use the Text Mode (F3) to avoid bugs (not being asked for root password)
  2. Do not activate the Enable Desktop Effect for old video card (such as i810)

Since my computer does not have a DVD ROM, I choose the Network Install method.

I use two iso files: Mini.iso and DVD ISO of the OpenSUSE 10.2

Below are steps I took for the installations:

  1. Burn the mini.iso into the CD-ROM the CD-ROOM will be the boot-CD
  2. Extract the content of the OpenSUSE 10.2 ISO (I use 7zip) to a shared directory (e.g. c:\Shared\OpenSUSE\) the c:\Shared is the shared directory while the OpenSUSE is a sub directory that contains files from the OpenSUSE 10.2 DVD ISO.
  3. Boot the Computer to be installed with OpenSUSE using the boot-CD and choose the installation procedure.

That is it folks, I’ve update the installation with the latest all available update (beware It’s big around 900 MB download) and right now the OpenSUSE 10.2 is running fine. In fact I wrote this blog using the OpenSUSE 10.2 Firefox. So far the performance has been quite good (subjective opinion).

Next Step, I would like to clone (create image) served as backup and to install it into another similar configured Optiflex GX-150.

Chiao…..

Hello Univers!

Welcome to my Blog at WordPress.com.

Since this is my first post, I would like to introduce myself a little bit.

I’m an entrepreneur that have been in software development business for more than 6 years.

I have natural passion about technology in general and Computer Software / System particularly. I’ve been developing application using Microsoft .NET Technology (C#) since it’s first release.

There are several application that I made utilizing Web Service, ADO.NET, Multi-Threading, MS SQL Server Strore Procedure.

I’ve started build my own IT Development Team in 2002 and also been hired as a Senior Software Associate for PT Freeport Indonesia located in remote area of Irian Jaya Island. I’ve also develop some applications for PT ANZ Panin Bank in Jakarta.

Currently I’m supervising the implementation of Linux distribution in a Local Company PT Printing Industri Mahkota Maju. This is quite a challenging task since most of my experience involved with Microsoft System therefore I don’t have any experience with Linux System.

First, I choose the Ubuntu 6.10 and successfully installed it in DELL OptiFlex GX150 (Pentium III 1.0 Ghz, 512 MB SDRAM, 80 GB HDD).

Next, I try to install the OpenSUSE 10.2 using network / remote installation method. Unfortunately I’m still struggling, since I can’t make the mini.iso boot cd see my Windows Shared forlder which contain the full dvd iso of the OpenSUSE 10.2.

Seems like another time to use google to search for more ‘how to’ to solve my problem installing the OpenSUSE 10.2 using network installation method. I’ll post another update regarding this process at latter time.
